Taste of Ethiopia
Authentic Ethiopian cuisine · Family-owned in Metro Detroit since 2005

Welcome to Taste of Ethiopia

Taste of Ethiopia is a family-owned, women-powered restaurant serving authentic Ethiopian cuisine to Metro Detroit since 2005. Before you head over, dive into the food, the coffee, the spices, and the table tradition — and book your seats without bouncing between half a dozen apps.

Ethiopian food is one of the great communal cuisines of the world: spiced stews and crisp greens served on a single round of soft, tangy injera, eaten by hand, shared from the middle of the table. If you love food that is generous, gluten-free by default, and wholly unlike anything else you'll eat this month — this is the night out for you.

About the Restaurant

Founded by Meski and Kassa in 2005, Taste of Ethiopia is a Southfield mainstay in the Metro Detroit area. The dining room is warm, the music is real, the coffee is roasted at the table, and the menu has a generous vegetarian and vegan side. We are halal-friendly and celiac-friendly — injera is naturally gluten-free. Read more about us

The Menu, in Brief

Our menu is organized the way an Ethiopian meal is: a messob table full of stews, greens, and lentils, served on injera. Order the Vegetarian Combo for a tour of the kitchen, or the Meat Combo for spiced beef, lamb, and chicken in their classic preparations. See the full menu

Most-ordered dishes

  • Veggie Combo — a sampler of misir, gomen, atkilt, kik alicha, and more
  • Doro Wat — slow-cooked chicken in berbere with a hard-boiled egg
  • Awaze Tibs — sautéed beef in a spicy awaze marinade
  • Doro Tibs & Doro Alicha — chicken, two ways
  • Sambosa — crisp turnovers stuffed with lentils or meat
  • Tilapia — whole fish, Ethiopian-style

The Coffee Ceremony

Coffee was first cultivated in Ethiopia. The traditional buna ceremony — green beans roasted at the table, ground by hand, brewed in a clay jebena, and served in three rounds (abol, tona, baraka) — is one of the oldest hospitality traditions on Earth. We perform it on request and at events. More about the coffee ceremony
